Vector Runner Review

Due to popular demand (and by "popular demand", I mean "a group people begging DigYourOwnGrave"), Vector Runner has finally been added to Kongregate, high score API included. (and hopefully badge API as well) Good timing too, because Momiji has been a negative nancy lately. It's time for a positive review!

Vector Runner
In Vector Runner, you play a pilot a racing block/car/thing, avoiding spikes, which increase in size as you advance, collecting point bonuses (ranging from 500 and up), and just staying alive. You play using the arrow keys, left and right. In case you were wondering, the controls are great - movement is smooth and there are only three keys to use. 2 arrow keys and enter to pause (by the way, you lose 25o points when you pause, so make sure you play with no distractions!). The controls are simple, easy to remember, easy to master, and handle well. As for the rest of the game, what can I say? It's an arcade-like game where you drive around avoiding obstacles and collecting stuff. It's hard to describe the angle, but that's what the image of gameplay is for. Saves me time. Anyway, obstacles get tougher to dodge after a while because they get bigger over time, the stuff you collect begin to give you more points, and I think there are even some upgrades to refill your shield. Oh yeah, game over after 3 hits. I think it's about time to move on. Okay - music. Just awesome. It's got a great beat to it and it kind of represents something you'd hear in an old-school arcade. Grouped with the fact it has high scores, you can just close your eyes and imagine the group of kids behind you cheering you on to knock T.B. off the top spot before the arcade closes. On top of that, there is a mute button! Hooray for Carados! Well anyway, the sound is also fantastic. The sound effects are clear and synced with the game, not to mention there is even a "whooshing" sound effect when you move around. That's just awesome. Anyway, graphics. Now, here's where some people who haven't played many old school games will be turned off. First of all, the graphics are just colored wires. Very simple and most people will recognize the attempt at nostalgia, but some people, especially the younger audience, probably won't find it too appealing. Speaking objectively, the graphics are very simple, and could be considered bad. Speaking subjectively, the graphics are great and remind me of the good ol' days. That about rounds up the longest "graphics" section. Now then, replay value. I'll be honest, I always thought arcade games were MADE to suck the quarters right out of your pocket. Before playing this game, I sometimes picture myself walking to an arcade, pocketful of my allowance, ready to spend it all on one game, attempting to get the high score. And that's what I like about this game - it has high scores. What's an arcade game without a list of high scores? Why bother getting 10 mil points if you have no proof? Exactly. And that's why I love Vector Runner so much. Playing it with friends to compete for a top score, or challenging your online pals, Vector Runner has something that most flash games don't - it's competitive. Sure, it's not multiplayer, but it's fun to challenge your friends to see who can get the most points. Or die the fastest, or whatever. Just like old-school arcade games, you would play the game for hours trying to get into the high score list, only to be knocked down by someone else. If you enjoy a little competitive spirit, then gather up your friends, get a big computer monitor, and relive the old days of playing for glory while your friends watch and cheer you on, or maybe even play against you. I might be going a bit overboard with this nostalgia thing, but that's what I feel while playing this game. I feel like calling my friends over to watch me beat someone's high score they worked hours on to get. And that's what makes this game awesome. By the way, there are some in-game achievements, so that's something else. And hopefully, this game will soon get badges. Nonetheless, fantastic game and I highly suggest it.
